Summer break is the perfect window to slow down and pour into your child’s faith before the busyness of a new school year — and a new stage of life — begins.
At Fathom Family Foundation, we know that the tween and pre-teen years are some of the most formative for a child’s sense of identity. That’s why we created Rooted, a free 28-day summer Scripture reading plan designed specifically for pre-teens preparing to enter high school.
Why a Summer Devotional for Pre-Teens Matters
The transition from middle school to high school is one of the biggest identity shifts a young person will face. New social circles, new pressures, and new expectations can leave pre-teens asking, “Who am I, really?” Rooted answers that question before the world gets the chance to — by grounding your child’s identity in Scripture, not in social status, appearance, or performance.
This Christian summer Bible study for tweens walks pre-teens through four weeks of daily Scripture readings, reflection, and journaling, helping them internalize a simple but life-changing truth: knowing who you are in Christ determines who you become.
What’s Inside the Rooted Scripture Reading Plan
Rooted is broken into four weekly themes, each paired with seven days of short, digestible Bible passages and a guided journal prompt for deeper reflection.
Week 1: Created on Purpose — My value comes from God. Daily readings from Psalm 139, Genesis 1, Ephesians 2, Jeremiah 1, 1 Samuel 16, Luke 12, and Romans 8 help pre-teens see themselves the way their Creator sees them: intentional, image-bearing, and deeply loved.
Week 2: Standing Strong — Following Jesus through peer pressure. With passages from Romans 12, Daniel 1, Proverbs 13, 1 Corinthians 15, Galatians 1, Joshua 24, and Psalm 1, this week equips kids to choose wise friendships and stay rooted in their faith even when it’s hard to stand out.
Week 3: Becoming Who God Created You to Be — Building identity before high school. Scripture from Galatians 2, 2 Corinthians 5, Colossians 3, Proverbs 31, Philippians 4, 1 Timothy 4, and Matthew 5 helps pre-teens replace the labels the world gives them with the identity God has already spoken over them.
Week 4: Walking Into the Future — Entering high school with confidence. The final week — featuring Isaiah 41, Proverbs 3, James 1, Ephesians 3, Psalm 46, Hebrews 12, and Philippians 1 — sends pre-teens into their next season trusting that the same God who has been faithful will keep working in them.
Each week closes with a reflective journal prompt, giving kids space to process what they’re reading and parents a natural, low-pressure way to open up meaningful conversations at the dinner table or in the car.
A Simple Tool for Family Discipleship This Summer
You don’t need a curriculum degree or a perfectly scheduled quiet time to disciple your child well — you just need a simple, consistent rhythm. Rooted is designed to be that rhythm: five to ten minutes a day, one short passage, one big idea, and space to talk about it as a family.
Whether your pre-teen is heading into their freshman year this fall or you simply want to build a stronger Scripture memory and identity foundation before the school year ramps up, this reading plan offers an easy, faith-filled way to spend part of your summer together.
